Abstract

This paper presents a novel sensing arrangement which provides resolution of a hot water tank’s state of charge enabling effective demand side management. Experimental work demonstrates consistency with independent measurements made by arrays of temperature sensors to within 3% and 5% for energy storage potential and available hot water respectively. Different approaches to signal conditioning are explored and the implications for the wider power system are discussed
